What’s the point of an office? – Text for reading and comprehension
Until the beginning of 2020, most non-production workers spent their working day in an office. Nobody really questioned this reality. It was just the way things were. The start of the Corona pandemic changed all of that. Suddenly people had to work from home. For many people, this was chaotic. Kids had remote schooling and even if you had a good Internet connection, it was a challenge to find enough space for the whole family to sit in front of their laptop or tablet.
However, things settled down and we managed. One American survey of Fortune 500 companies showed that productivity remained stable or increased after employees began working remotely.
So, do we actually need to go to the office? Companies could save money if they didn’t need to provide every worker with a desk and working from home can help employees find a better work-life balance.
It seems that going to the office is important for many people. Most people say that they prefer to work at the office, at least for most of the week. So, why is that? For some it is important to meet colleagues to talk about both work and private topics, while others want to have a clear boundary between work and home life. Many employers also want their people at work as they feel there is more control and a better focus.
What is clear is that the working world has changed, and individuals now have greater opportunities to find the working model that is best for them and their personal situation.
