Session 1 – Telephoning / Leaving a Message
1. Introduce your partner:
Please include the following information in your introduction:
- Name
- How long they have been in the company and in what position(s).
- What they use English for and how often.
- What their personal English goals are for this course.
- Three things you have in common that you didn’t know already (Gemeinsamkeiten).

5. Role Play:
A. In pairs, practice calling and leaving a message. Be sure to include important information like:
– What is the priority level? Do you need to say if it is urgent?
– When are you available for a call back?
– I’m in the office until 5 today.
– I’ll be here for the next hour.
B. With your partner, discuss a common phone call you would make in the office. Using the phrases introduced in “Key Telephone Phrases” Practice creating a dialogue. *You will need to write out this dialogue and record it (both parts) as part of your homework.
5. Homework:
A: Typical Phone Call Dialogue. Please send your dialogue as a voice message (audio recording).
B: “Call” and leave a voice message for one of the following scenarios:
A) give me the update of a delivery status.
B) ask if spare part X is available and when it can be shipped.
C) apologize for the customers dissatisfaction and explain what you are doing to fix their problem.
