Session 28(17th May 8:30-10:00)
Describing trends using graphs
(completed task) Are there any patterns for how the prepositions are used (for, in, by etc)? Look at nouns and verbs, too, in the text below.
Overall there was an increase in profit last year. Sales remained stable for the first 5 months. Sales fell from 25% to 13% in June – a significant decline of 12%. There was a dramatic rise between July and October, when sales reached a peak of 38%. Sales then declined slighty by 3% to 3,000 before increasing again in December.
for = period of time (for 5 months)
between X and Y = period of time (between July and October)
in = month or year/noun (in June/in profit)
from…to = verb + difference (rose from 25% to 13%)
of = noun + difference (a decline of 12%)
by = verb + difference (declined by 3%)
to = verb + final value (sales fell to 3,000)
