Hi Andy
Could you please explain me the following sentence:
The orders should not be sent this week.
I wanted to say “The orders should not been sent this week.”
Why is it not correct as orders is plural?
Thank you.
Regards,
Doris
The reason is that in this passive sentence “should” is the auxiliary verb (Hilfsverb). The verb “be” is in the infinitive form. That means that if there were a a plural form of “should”, then it would be used here. However, as there is no plural form, then there is no difference between “The order should not be sent this week” and “The orders should not be sent this week.

Does that make sense?
